Amata Nonna

“Amata Nonna” – Beloved Grandmother

She appeared to be a most beloved grandmother, sitting on the stairs, folding palms! The photo I had taken, a perfect souvenir from a recent trip to Italy. I was compelled to honor her and bring her to life in my painting – but that was only the first part. Secondly, I had to try and find out who she was to send her a print of the painting in gratitude for the joy she brought me in creating her likeness. Best chance was to send a letter to a nearby florist in the hopes he might know who she was and deliver my letter to her – and he did! A few months later, she sent me a warm and wonderful letter introducing herself. She, too, is an artist! We have been corresponding ever since! I have sent her an Illinois Bicentennial pin and will send her a picture of me wearing mine standing next to her painting during this reception. My new friend has invited me to walk with her on the beach near her home should I ever return to Italy. I am hoping!
